Trump Says Abortion Should Be Left Up to the States

While touting a general pro-life stance, former President Donald Trump says that abortion policy should be decided by “the will of the people” in each U.S. state.

In a four-minute video posted to Truth Social on April 8, President Trump said the landmark Dobbs v. Jackson decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which landed abortion under the states’ purview, embodies the correct directive for the nation, in his opinion.

“My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint,” he said. States will decide “by vote or legislation or perhaps both” how to regulate abortion. “And whatever they decide must be the law of the land; in this case, the law of the state,” President Trump said.

Ultimately, each person involved in an abortion is making a highly personal decision, he acknowledged.

“You must follow your heart or in many cases, your religion or your faith. Do what’s right for your family and do what’s right for yourself. Do what’s right for your children. Do what’s right for our country,” he said.
