The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning – with swells of up to 10ft expected, according to Japan‘s Meteorological Agency (JMA).
Officials have now warned of a megaquake – an enormous tremor caused by an initial smaller earthquake.
Chances of earthquakes at 8.0 magnitude or higher have rocketed, and will remain high for the next week, the government warned.
The last time the island was rocked by a megquake – scaling up at a huge 9.0 magnitude earthquake – was in 2011, causing a nuclear meltdown and killing around 20,000 people.
