FDA approves new mRNA Covid shots for coming winter virus season

Health officials have approved the latest version of Covid vaccines ahead of the coming winter virus season. 

The FDA Thursday approved updated Moderna, Sanofi and Pfizer Covid vaccines after an advisory panel recommended the shots should target the XFG 'Stratus' variant.

XFG is a variant derived from the Omicron Covid virus that dominated last year's virus season and has been associated with a painful sore throat that feels like a 'razor-blade.' 

Officials said the Moderna and Pfizer shots are expected to begin shipping to pharmacies and doctors' offices within the next several days. Sanofi, which distributes the non-mRNA shot Novavax (Nuvaxovid), said doses would be available in the coming days, with timing varying by location.
