Trump makes last-gasp Supreme Court bid to rewrite mail-in ballot rules as states warn of pure havoc

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to approve an executive order giving the US Postal Service sweeping power to regulate mail-in ballots - the latest update in an extraordinary, eleventh-hour court fight ahead of the midterms. 

Lawyers for the Trump administration punted the matter to the high court Thursday, before the 1st Circuit US Court of Appeals had a chance to review the appeal centered on enforcement of a new USPS mail-in ballot portal. 

The portal would be used to compare mail-in ballots against a central repository of registered voters compiled from information from all US states. 

The Trump administration described the rules in its appeal Thursday as 'only modest envelope-design and addressee-information requirements.' 

'The rule thus plainly does not seize control of states’ administration of elections,' they told the high court. 'It simply imposes reasonable preparation requirements for certain election-related mail.'
