Trump swapped planes at Nato summit after ‘Iranian threat to Air Force One’

A “credible” Iranian threat to Air Force One forced Donald Trump to switch planes when returning from the Nato summit in Ankara earlier in July.

The president was set to fly back to the US on the new Qatari-donated Boeing 747-8, which had brought him to the Turkish capital.

However at the last minute Mr Trump was forced to use his original Air Force One jet, rather than the lavish new aircraft. 

He later boarded the Qatari-donated plane during a stopover at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk.

The decision was taken on the advice of the US Secret Service after officials discovered a threat that Iranian proxy forces were targeting him and the aircraft, the New York Times reported. 

Details of the threat were neither disclosed publicly nor shared with senior members of Congress, or disseminated widely within the White House itself.
