Returning to the nation’s capital from a two-week recess, Republicans in Congress this week are looking to make major progress on crafting the bill that will include President Donald Trump’s biggest legislative priorities on the border, defense, energy and taxes.
After huddling with key congressional leaders to kick off the week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters at Tuesday’s White House press briefing that discussions and movement on the bill are going “much better” than he expected.
“The tax bill is going much better than I would have thought when I took office on Jan. 28, and that's through President Trump's leadership [and] that Speaker Johnson, Leader Thune are united,” Bessent said, going on to tout a “very good meeting” he had Monday that also included White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett; House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.; Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.; Senate Finance Chair Mike Crapo, R-Idaho; and House Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith, R-Mo.
