President Donald Trump signed a new executive order Monday that classifies fentanyl as a "weapon of mass destruction."
The president made the announcement ahead of a medal pinning for military members receiving the Mexican Border Defense Medal.
"There's no doubt that America's adversaries are trafficking fentanyl into the United States, in part because they want to kill Americans," Trump said. "If this were a war, that would be one of the worst wars."
Why It Matters
The drug has been a focal point for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for the past few years, with overdoses linked to the substance growing rapidly between 2018 and 2022, although numbers have declined over the past year.
